New Year New Favorites

It’s a new year and a realization that we’ve been in the pandemic for almost 2 years…..wow I just can’t wrap my mind around it. I have gone back to work and my high schooler is back in school but we have spent a lot of time at home which means a lot of no spend challenges simply because we were locked down and couldn’t go anywhere so we had to make do with what we had at home.

I really haven’t spent much on myself, no new clothes, nothing fun at all. I put together a list of some things I would buy for myself, some are useful and some just for fun. Maybe something new that I want to try but would never actually buy. The frugal person in me always says you don’t need it, more stuff that adds to the clutter but actually some of these items would reduce my clutter and simplify certain areas of my life. So here’s a list of some of my favorites!

I love the author, Brene Brown, for some reason, she just speaks to me. She has a new book out that I would love to read Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience. I know I can always get this from the library or sometimes I wait and find books I want to read at the thrift store after everybody has read them and they are no longer popular.

I’ve read a couple of her books and watched her Ted Talks, Here are some of her other books if you are interested. I adore her!

If you read our blog you might have seen the article about Making Your Own Foam Soap. It saves a ton of money and you just reuse your old plastic foam soap dispensers. You can actually buy glass refillable foam soap dispensers, I love these Mason Jar Foaming Soap Dispensers. The old store-bought plastic dispensers that I’ve refilled 100 times are starting to break. The pump doesn’t want to work anymore, so these Mason Jar Foaming Soap Dispensers are meant to be refilled over and over and they are super cute!

I need refillable spice jars, I buy my spices in bulk as much as I can because You Can Save Money by Refilling Instead of Buying New. However, my spice cupboard is a hot mess. I’ve got different sizes and brands of bottles and tins that I’ve refilled but some have handwritten labels on them. I can figure it all out when I’m looking for spices but it drives my husband nuts and he can never find anything. I need jars that are all the same size and shape with nice labels, I can still continue to refill them but they will look nice and organized and will be easy to identify.

My only requirements: I want them to be glass, not plastic, they need to have shaker lids so I can sprinkle if I just need a small amount. They don’t have to be clear, spices actually last longer when they aren’t exposed to sunlight or artificial light.

I really want a cookie dough scoop set. This Stainless Steel 1 Tablespoon, 2 Tablespoon, 3 Tablespoon Cookie Dough Scoop Set would be perfect. My daughter loves to make cookies but by the time she’s ready to bake them she’s too lazy to try to measure them out so we end up with 8 giant cookies that won’t bake all the way through. This set would be perfect for us!

Ok, this is a big wish but I’ve seen the commercials and this printer looks amazing. My printer goes through ink cartridges like crazy! I even wrote an article Changing your Printer Font and Other Ink Saving Tips so I know all of the tricks. However my printer uses so much ink, the cartridges are so expensive and they don’t last. I don’t even print in color, black ink only and I use the draft setting so it uses the least amount of ink as possible. I’ve seen the commercials for this Epson EcoTank InkJet Printer, it claims to have 2 years’ worth of ink in the box. I’m just wondering if I would save money in the long run not having to buy an ink cartridge every other month. Let me know if you have this printer or know somebody who does. It has mixed reviews so I’m not sure if it’s worth the price or not.

A Ring Doorbell would be really useful. We have so many car prowlers at night and package thieves during the day. Quite honestly where we live police don’t come out to your house unless you are being murdered and they don’t take reports for property crime or thefts but I would like to maybe scare somebody away or identify who these people are. It’s not the fault of the police, their hands are tied but these thieves have no fear.

Another useful thing that I would enjoy is a Home Air Purifier. We have many times where the fires around us are so bad they tell us to close all of our windows and stay inside. In the winter when the furnace is going and we are inside for days at a time. We breathe air that’s being circulated over and over. A Home Air Purifier with a Hepa Filter would be nice. This Miko Air Purifier for Home removes 99.97% of Smoke Pollen and Dust. Usually, it’s $99.99 but today it’s $67.99.

I would love some soft anti-fatigue mats to put in front of my sink and by my island where I stand and chop everything. This set of 2 Anti-Fatigue Non-Slip Memory Foam Mats looks like they would be really soft and comfortable for working in the kitchen.

I say I want something like this All in One Journaling Kit with pens and stickers and stencils and washi tape but honestly, I would never use it. I would use it for the first week and try to be organized but I just need the calendar on my phone. That’s where I put everything that I need to remember. It would probably end up sitting on my counter and stay there the rest of the year, looks like it would be fun to put together though!

Ok, these I would use for sure, Silicone Non-Stick Baking Mats. I wouldn’t have to use parchment for most of my baking. I always reuse my parchment paper but not having to use parchment at all would be great. We bake a lot, between cookies and bread these would not sit in a cupboard somewhere unused. There is a lot to choose from, some have pre-printed templates for cookie placement and pie crusts. Love these!!!

I realize most of these are not anything new. However, these are new for someone like me who never buys anything unless I’ve thought about it for at least a year. Justified in my mind that I would absolutely use it. And will wait till I get enough points in my Fetch Rewards account to cash in for a free Amazon Gift Card, only then will I buy it!!! BTW if you don’t use Fetch Rewards you are missing out. You can scan any receipts from any store or restaurant. Your points add up and you can redeem them for gift cards. I’ve almost got enough points for a $50 Amazon gift card. Right now if you sign up for Fetch Rewards you get a 2000 point bonus. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone, I use it myself and have redeemed points for gift cards in the past.
