Homemade Whipped Cream

Homemade Whipped Cream

I know it’s easy and cheap to buy the tubs of “whipped topping” but you can make your own homemade whipped cream in the same time that it takes those tubs to thaw out, I don’t know about you but that fake stuff leaves a greasy weird taste in my mouth. When you make your own you know exactly what’s in it and it tastes 100 times better. Super simple homemade whipped cream.

At the store, you will see whipping cream and heavy whipping cream. The difference is the amount of milk fat, heavy whipping cream has 36% milk fat and regular whipping cream has 30% milk fat. For the best whipped cream, you want to use the “heavy” whipping cream. You could use regular whipping cream but it wouldn’t hold up as long.

Here’s what you need to make homemade whipped cream

  • 1 Pint (16 oz) Heavy Whipping Cream (you can use organic)
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar, Granulated or Powdered.
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla

For best results make sure the bowl and whisk are ice cold, put the empty bowl in your fridge ahead of time if you can. Chilling the bowl and whisk helps the whipping cream stiffen up faster, not the end of the world if you can’t. Use a stand-up mixer with the whisk attachment if you have one. A hand mixer works too, your hand might get a little tired. Beat heavy whipping cream on medium, while it’s mixing add in the sugar and vanilla. Mixing on medium-high helps whip air into the cream at just the right pace. You don’t want to leave it on high and overwhip the cream.

Some people prefer powdered sugar over granulated, it’s really your preference. I’ve used both and the actual amount that you use is so small that it doesn’t really make a difference. If you have granulated and you want to use powdered just follow my recipe to Make Powdered Sugar out of Granulated Sugar. Yes you can really do that and it works great, you could make all of your powdered sugar that way.

It will take a few minutes to get fluffy and billowy, you want the peaks to stand up when you lift up the spatula. Try this on my favorite budget-friendly dessert, 3 Ingredient Cherry Dump Cake. Soooooo yummy!!!
