Get rid of brussel sprout smell when cooking

Brussel Sprouts, you either love them or you hate them, we love, love, brussel sprouts, steamed, baked or my absolute favorite, Roasted Brussel Sprouts with Onions. The recipe is really simple, trim all your brussel sprouts and cut the larger ones in half, cut onions in bigger pieces so they bake at the same rate as the brussel sprouts.

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees, dump your brussel sprouts and onions on a foil covered sheet pan, with one hand start mixing vegetables, with the other hand drizzle olive oil. Mix until everything has a light coating of olive oil, spread them out evenly then sprinkle salt and pepper over the top, bake in the oven for around 20 minutes. You are looking for a slight char on everything (not burnt) it should look brown and caramelized. The caramelization adds the most delicious flavor, I could eat them every night they are so good and they are so good for you.

One big deterrent to making brussel sprouts is the smell when cooking, they really stink up the house especially when steaming them. Try putting a piece of uncooked celery in the water that you are steaming your brussel sprouts in, it doesn’t completely eliminate the smell but it helps, if it’s not the middle of winter you can open your windows and that lets some of the smell out, or you can have a bowl of plain old white vinegar next to the steamer to absorb some odors too.

I make a mixture in a saucepan on the stove that has cinnamon sticks, ground cinnamon, cloves if you have them, orange or lemon slices, add enough water to cover, and slowly simmer on the stove. This is my frugal Homemade Natural Freshener recipe, it looks strange but it works wonders, your house smells like the holidays, cinnamon with a hint of citrus.

If you don’t like cinnamon or citrus you can always try vanilla or vanilla pods, I hesitate to recommend this because vanilla is so expensive right now, have you seen the price of vanilla lately? You can use some imitation vanilla extract, pour a small amount into a oven safe glass bowl or a couple of vanilla pods in an oven safe dish, and let it sit in the oven on low heat after you have roasted the brussel sprouts, slowly your kitchen will have the delicious smell of vanilla in the air, the smell always reminds of baking cookies.
